There are many many options trading strategies out there. There is a strategy for every possible scenario you can think of. There are strategies that are for generative passive income, and there are strategies that fall into the category of active income. There are strategies that pay off VERY quickly and there are strategies that may pay off after a several months to a year, or even more.

Since the question here is how long does it take to make money by trading options, I want to mainly talk about the short term strategies with the quick turn around. Like I said, with some options strategies you might not see returns for up to a year or more…but no one cares about that. We all want to make money fast, or maybe that’s just me.

With that being said, you can see returns on an option strategy in a matter of minutes. Yes, you read that right and No your eyes are not deceiving you. With the right options strategy and the right stock you can see a return on your money in a matter of minutes.

Something to remember is that options move in parallel with a stock price so obviously the more a stock moves, the more the price of the option (on that stock) will move relative to the stock price.

If you purchase a stock option on a stock at market open (9:30ET) and the stock shoots up in price within a matter of minutes, you can close out that option contract and you will have made a profit within a matter of minutes.

The key here is to pick a stock that has some volatility to it. With a volatile stock, it is not uncommon to see price movements of $5 or more within seconds of the market opening. These movements can be based on the general volatility of the stock, some recent news about the stock or some recent news about the economy or general industry of that particular stock.

It does not really matter what causes the stock to be volatile, what is important is that you identify that the stock is or will be experiencing some volatility in the near future. The next step is to place your option trade right around the time when that stock would have that volatility.

Once you do, you should be able to lock in your profit within a matter of minutes.
